Comparing Amalfi Coast towns: Which is best for you?

Everyone has heard of the majestic stories of traveling to the Amalfi Coast: one of the most popular destinations in Italy. But not everyone knows that there is a lot more to offer than the popular Instagram photo spots you see online. There are many different areas to explore, each with their own pros and cons. Many tourists are overwhelmed when making the decisions of where to spend their time and lots just avoid it altogether. But with the right information, this Italian region creates a jaw dropping experience that you will not want to miss. That’s where I come in ;)

Spending over a month on the Amalfi Coast working in the hospitality industry, I learned all the “dos and don’ts” of traveling not only from first hand tourist experiences, but also from the locals who have worked in the industry for years! It all really comes down to what kind of trip you are looking for and what is best for you specifically. So in this article, I will discuss the cities of Positano, Sorrento, and Capri along with everything I would have wanted to know before planning my first trip to the Amalfi Coast!

Positano:

If you have looked through social media to find photos of the Amalfi Coast, I guarantee you have seen the iconic backdrop of Positano. The aesthetic vista of colorful buildings covering an entire hill is definitely this town’s claim to fame. Because of this, Positano is one of the most touristy areas, and therefore, one of the most expensive. You will find an endless amount of shops and cafes lining almost every street. On the other hand, because it is more populated, this is where you will find the most nightlife.

The beaches in Positano have very clear water and have mainly pebbles instead of sand. It has the incredible view of the town as the backdrop to your beach experience, it is definitely a must try! I recommend splurging on day beds for a more relaxing experience (you can reserve them in advance), but there are also free public areas you can use if you are wanting to stick to a stricter budget. MY ADVICE: Do not stay overnight in Positano. It is better to take a day trip or two and splurge on daybeds and nicer meals than overpaying for a place in town. Sorrento is less than an hour away by bus or ferry and has lots of more affordable options. Plus, I found I got my fill of Positano in two day trips so I was glad I did not set up camp there.

Capri:

Capri is its own small island of Italy but clumped into the region of the Amalfi Coast because of how close it is to the mainland (30 minute ferry). The turquoise water and unique caves that surround the island make for an unforgettable day on the water! Not to mention the famous “Arch of Love”: local legend says that if you kiss the one you love while sailing under the arch you will be together forever. So If you are thinking about having a boat day while in the Amalfi Coast, make sure it is around Capri!

The island also gives off a greek island vibe due to the white wash buildings with pops of color and incredible seafood. The most popular activity in Capri is to take the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro. It is one of the most peaceful and jaw dropping experiences you will come across on your trip. It is only a 13 euro charge round trip and you get to explore at the top (you will want to take lots of pictures). Near the lift is also a perfect cafe for a refreshing snack. MY ADVICE: Find a boat tour of Capri that docks on the island for a few hours so you can get the best of both worlds, beaches and the town. Capri is another perfect day trip from Sorrento, but an overnight trip can also be done if Capri is the main destination you came to see (if you don't mind taking ferries with your luggage). There are also many beautiful beach clubs on the island if you want to see the water without going on a boat.

Sorrento:

Sorrento is hands down the best place to stay and set up camp if you are looking for a less chaotic Amalfi Coast Experience. All of the transportation (bus, train, ferry) stations are within walking distance all with numerous routes and times throughout the day. The town is also more affordable than the surrounding areas, so you don't have to spend as much money for the same kind of accommodation, food, or souvenirs!

Sorrento also has a greater variety than some of the other destinations. There are more options for food, souvenirs, activities, and even beaches! There are many beach clubs lined up against Marina Piccola and they are all stunning. It is some of the bluest water I have even seen and almost all of the clubs bring delicious food and drinks to your daybed. MY ADVICE: Stay in Sorrento for the duration of your trip to avoid the stress of repacking/checking in every few days. Plan day trips to your desired destinations in advance and book the tickets. This way, whatever you want to do is not sold out or more expensive due to last minute purchases. Also leave a few days to stay in Sorrento and explore the rich culture, history, and beauty the city has to offer!
