Is Mesa Falls Worth A Visit?

Short Answer: YES! My family and I flew into Idaho Falls (also beautiful) and drove to our VRBO in West Yellowstone. We wanted something to break up the drive and heard about Mesa Falls from a local on our flight. It is located in Ashton, Idaho so it was a perfect halfway marker. Coming from Florida, we all thought a waterfall would be fun to see on our road trip so we decided to check it out. I am so happy we did because it became one of my FAVORITE parts of the whole trip! There is a lot of information online about this beautiful place but it can all be a little overwhelming. So here is everything you need to know for an efficient, stress free, BEAUTIFUL stop to Mesa Falls!

There are two main viewing points you will find for Mesa Falls: Upper and Lower. Both places offer gorgeous scenery, but they are very different in the perspectives they offer. The turnoff roads are not far from each other (1.1 miles) so it is very realistic to check out both if you want. Here are some details and differences of these lookouts to help you plan your perfect experience:

Upper Mesa Falls:

If you are looking for a close up view of the massive, powerful beauty of this waterfall, the upper trail is perfect for you. In the sunlight you can even see a rainbow emerging from the mist of the falls! The loop is an easy 0.5 mile walk that brings you right back to the parking lot where restrooms and water fountains are available. There are multiple platforms to overlook the majestic view throughout the loop that are perfect for pictures.

Lower Mesa Falls:

If you are looking for a short walk to a breathtaking nature landscape then the lower trail is perfect for you. A jump, skip, and a hop from your car will take you to a world of pine trees, rivers, and even little chipmunks (Unfortunately, none of them sang to me). There is even a picnic table set up on the overlook so you can enjoy a meal amidst the incredible sights around you! This access point permits less of the waterfall view and move of the river it becomes further down.
